Droid App Development

Folks I'm looking into how to learn to developing Droid apps. So far I found one tool out there called AppInventor from a few folks at MIT. Any suggestions or ideas on other tools that are top notch? And do I need to be a rocket scientist type of developer or can I get away with any good advanced out of the box tools?
