Droid A855 black screen

I'm trying to fix my daughters phone. I had the X and now have the Charge. I've rooted and rom'd both so I semi know my way around the Droid phones. She has the original Droid. She said that the screen is black. It was almost fully charged and she (21 years old) says she hasn't dropped it or got it wet. I told her to battery pull which she did a couple of times. The phone comes on, you can hear it boot up, the lights at the bottom are visible but the screen is completely black. Thoughts or ideas? Obviously there is no warranty and since I bought it used there is also no insurance. It's not rooted; completely stock.

Did you ever get a good fix for this? I have a stock OG Droid -- with basically the same problem. It will receive texts, calls, etc... but the screen stays black. It seems some sort of backlight comes on at boot, but the screen will not light up at all.

I've seen various ideas, but no confirmations that a suggested fix worked.
