Hello everyone. A newbie and a dummy here. I have the Droid 2 and my brother-in-law just did the "root" for me. The reason for the root was so thta I could tether. I'm not completely sold on tethering yet...it seems to be slower than I expected.

Also, other than the tethering...what else could I do differntly with the Droid now that it's rooted? Remember, I'm a dummy...that's why I'm asking these kind of questions.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Theres rom's, themes and overclocking. Check out the D2 section for more info. If you have more questions, just ask.

I appreciate the response. I realize that it basically takes off the restrictions that Verizon put on them, but what does that mean for me? How does that benefit me in my everyday use of the phone?

I appreciate all of the patience with me while I try to figure things out.

    Thanks again,

First, you don't have to add a custom ROM unless you want to. They come with different bells, whistles, and bugs. Now if you want to just root here's what it does for you:

It will improve battery life by using overclocking and underclocking.

You can get rid of all the bloatware that's cluttering up your home screen.

There are a lot more useful apps like Cache Mate that will clear your phone's cache with a single touch as opposed to doing each individually.

I also use quick boot to quickly reboot my phone though I don't do that much. You also get Titanium Backup for your apps. This is useful if you play games like Angry Birds or Home Run Battle 3D. If you do have to do a wipe on your phone, and I think sooner or later everyone does this will keep you from losing your score, levels, items..etc.
