Okay so I dowloaded the universal androot app and I've followed all of the directions in order to root my droid 2 running 2.2.
I click root and it'll say rooting device, installing toolkit, and then root failed! edited by moderator~goo. I have no clue why it keeps saying that why the root is failing! PLEASE HELP BECAUSE ITS DRIVING ME CRAZY!

I've used z4Root at least 3 times and it's worked fine on my D2 every time.
I've attached a copy of it, just change the extension form doc to apk and drop it on your SD card. Run it with Files app.

Okay I know this sounds crazy but how do I update to 2.3? And if I do will I have to re-root for 2.3?

Try z4root, its extremely easy when it works. I could not get it to work for my current phone. If that doesn't work try SuperOneClick from xda. Just make sure you have the correct drivers installed on your computer!

And just as a clarification, if you use a custom rom, the stock software updates will not download or install.
