Downloading XLS from a MAC.

I have a certain client that sends XLS doc from his mac.
When I download it from my gmail account it comes up as a doc. that none of the programs will read.
When I forward that same email with that same doc. from any other phone other than droid or even forward it from my computer back to my phone again, it works perfect with any of my programs.
You guys got any suggestions? Is this a Verizon problem or an Android problem?

I think I have found the problem.
When putting a gmail account in messaging. It will not download the file correctly.
I just deleted the gmail account in the messaging and activated the mail check box under gmail account and got the guy to resend the same email and the attachment worked correctly.
It must be and issue with dowloading email in the messaging part of the Adroid phone system.
