This might be a dumb question but does it matter or should I or should I not have my Droid plugged in charging when I:

Am backing up my phone clockwork

    Installing a new kernel

    Thanks for the help.

It doesn't matter, but rule of thumb is if you don't have a sufficient charge on your device, charge it before you do any real flashing/restoring/or backing-up...because, I believe devices don't charge while in recovery

I'll confirm they don't charge in recovery.

Had a bad ROM flash that kept boot looping and I wasn't paying attention to my battery level and went below the thresh-hold for RSDLite (wanted to push an sbf). I was however able to plug it in and power it to do the recovery flash to stock to get it charged enough to continue later.

Thanks fish for confirming that, I was pretty sure but don't like to give false information so I left a small opening for error :)

I'm with ya on that. I was a little freaked out at first, but figured I'd go home and use the wife's D2 battery. But after having it turned off all night, I tried one last idea and it worked.
I can honestly say that with this phone, I've learned not to panic when I screw it up. So far I've been able to do CPR* on it every time and bring it back. :)

(* - computer processor resuscitation) - gonna have to trademark that! LOL
