I've made themes for the BlackBerry before but it was much easier, I checked the tools thread and there's like 15 different tools for making Android themes, and a lot of terms I was unfamiliar with. I just want to do simple things like change widget colors, or make a different dialer... would I be able to do things like this with zero programming knowledge whatsoever?

I don't know jack about programming. You can changed icons fairly easily, until you get to .9 images. The more you read about things and tools you find the farther you want to go with editing. At least that is the case with me.

Alright, so I used 7zip and extracted a random .apk, do I just need to edit the image files in the res/drawable folder? Are there any good tutorials anywhere? I searched google but could only find ones that were over a year old.

Most of the images you would edit are in /res/drawable-hdpi.
