Disappearing photos?

I'm using the Astro app on my Thunderbolt to upload photos I take with my camera onto Facebook. However, when I submit them to be uploaded (whether they go through successfully or not) they disappear from my Gallery as well as from the Astro gallery. (The photos that disappear in the Astro application are the ones located in the DCIM/100MEDIA folder.)

First of all, how can I prevent this from happening? And second, is there a way I can retrieve my lost photos on my phone?
