There is a white LED right next to the charging port that is pretty bright and indicates that the phone is charging. That LED is bright enough to be a disturbance when I am trying to sleep. I don't want to put a shirt over my Droid at night because it tends to result in the phone getting snagged on the shirt when I pull it off, yanking on the cord. Instead I don't charge the phone at night whatsoever. This is bad because I cannot be certain that I will have enough time during every day to charge the phone sufficiently. I really want to disable that white LED. My Droid is rooted and has firmware 2.01.

Thank you. You may have been kidding but that is a workable option if there is no software solution.

This is my first post on a Droid forum, btw. Nice to join you. I upgraded from a Blackberry Storm and the Droid is definitely the most spectacular device around at the moment in the USA.

the dock does do a good job of hiding the light. plus it keeps it off of the table in case of spills, etc.

ACC20 will get you 20% off online.

    Alarm clock

    >Buy the dock.
I read that the four soft buttons light up while the phone is docked. That is even worse!

I cannot find the dock on the Verizon store website. Where were you suggesting I use this coupon code?

if you turn the display off, there's no light. you want your room to be completely dark, you'll want to turn the display off. if you need it for an alarm clock, it'll still work while off.

Thank you 640k. It sounds like you are referring to locking the phone to turn off the screen. With the phone locked or unlocked, the white LED is lit regardless as long as the phone is charging and not yet fully charged.

Right now my options, from easiest to most difficult/impossible are:

1: Color the side LED with opaque black ink.

2: Come up with a more convenient object to cover the device and extinguish the light than a shirt.

3: Find a command to disable the LED.

4: Open the device and disconnect the LED.

Option number 5. BUY THE DOCK.

when the phone is IN the dock you can not see the WHITE LED. just press ther power button once and the screen and soft buttons will turn off.

    YOUR PROBLEMS are solved.

Completely Dark DROID emitting ZERO light: CHECK
    fully functional alarm: CHECK
    charges the phone: CHECK

Thank you. I will do this. I was misinformed and thought that the soft keys would be lit at all times while docked. I now understand that if the screen is off while the device is docked, the soft keys will also turn off. This is the ideal solution.

Just use a strip of black electrical tape at night.

This light really effects your sleep? Damn, I can fall asleep with my clothes on, half off the bed, with the tv/lights/computer all on.

The LED turns off once the device is fully charged, too.

I bought the dock and the only way to use it as an alarm clock was to have the phone on. In that case, the four white lights will be on at all times. The only work around to this is to turn the phone off, then plug it into the dock. It will turn on without the white lights and still let you see the clock.

But just to give you a heads up - in that case - even with a 3rd party app, it still lit up half of my dark room and kept my wife awake. The phone dimmed all the way even with a 3rd party app is brighter than the little white LED that already bothers you.

I returned the dock because in my mind, it didn't work properly. I could potentially live with the brighter alarm clock lights, but the whole "trick" to get the white lights on the bottom of the phone to stay off is just something stupid that you shouldn't have to do. Not to mention if you leave the alarm screen the lights turn back on.

Only a complete ****ing idiot would design a dock to be used for an alarm clock and charging, and then do the equivalent of attaching a flashlight to the bottom of the phone. Unless you sleep in the daylight (which you obviously don't seeing as how you are not happy with the white LED charging light), the dock is a piece of ****...but that's just my opinion. Some people here have taped over the lights at night, etc...but you shouldn't have to do that with a 30 dollar dock.

I just set my alarm...docked it...turned off the screen with the power button...waited...alarm went off no problem.

    Interesting.

I guess that leaves out the ability to use it as a clock, though. So for home use it's ok (for me) because I have my regular alarm clock there), but traveling there is no point in dragging around a relatively heavy dock that can't be used as a clock during the night...I might as well just bring a regular wall charger.

My points about the design and flaws still stand.

Thanks for all the informative responses. I use AppAlarm for my alarm clock, so the comment about 3rd-party apps applies. To clarify my personal situation, I turn off the screen entirely every night and never use the phone as an at-a-glance bedside clock. The screen is too bright for that purpose. I have three tasks that I want my phone to complete during the night: charge the phone, emit no light, and make noise in the morning to wake me up.

I will not get the dock. The dock is a good solution for the home if I can use it to make the phone completely dark while charging. I would be out of luck while traveling because I would not bring the dock. I will just take a sharpie to the LED and be done with it. DROID
