It should be pointed out that 3G provides you some degree of anonymity (IP address changes frequently), whereas home WiFi doesn't, with regard to who you really are.
Also, I stopped updating many apps, and keep an archive of old app versions that work fine for me.
Newer versions of apps are not always better, nor do they use less data (some added ads, and implemented all kinds of analytics measurements to report back to the mothership about what you are doing).
Only update an app if you are sure you want something in their "What's New" listing.

Just for those of you that don't know you can go into settings and turn off mobile data that way if you don't have wireless nothing will download and you will still get your unlimited txt and calls with no problem.

It just won't update any program, retrieve email etc. Nothing but txt and phone that way

I also use a app called Onavo, its free and you tell it your month and data info and it keeps track of it all to let you know how much is used. It also lets you know what programs are data hogs and lets you tell them to only work on wifi if you want.

Cool to see this has helped people. This thread is almost 2 years old. I may look to add a few minor additions to reflect the change in cellular landscape. Now with tablets and family share being a big part of life we need to make sure users are getting the most out of their plan while saving on money.

    Good WiFi App

I am a Verizon user that has unlimited data and an available upgrade. I dont want to lose my unlimited data but that seems to be the only choice with Verizon these days. Is there an app that can automatically connect to available/saved WiFi hotspots (i.e., home, work, school) and at the same time turn off the carrier data so I don't use up the limited data?

    Thank you!

Very good ideas you have put here to save our data. Thank you very much for these Data saving ideas. I want to add one more tip here to save battery also. If you are not browsing anything on your smartphone then keep your phone on "GSM only" mode. It provides 2g speed but you get messages and notifications on the time. When you want to browse then start "WCDMA only" it provides 3G speed. Thank you.
