Cut up and garbled text messages

I got my X a week ago and this morning it started only sending the first few letters of a text message. Usually just 8-10 characters at most.

Took it in and the non-troubleshooting first response was to do a hard reset/factory reset on it. It seems to have fixed it, but has anyone else had this issue?

Also, is that the only answer? To just wipe it out and start over if this happens again? I had to re-set up my screens, re enter my emails, re assign all of my sounds - all over again. How would I avoid this in the future?
