Here's a prefect example. Lets say I have a file that I want to use for my ringtone notification on my email. So every time I get a email, I will hear "you got mail".

Gotcha! So you're looking for notifications. Try Ringdroid from the market.

Also, if you want different notification tones for different applications, most have a "select ringtone" option in their settings. Hope this helps!

I know that the driod has individual ring tones for notifications but maybe I don't have my mp3 file in the right directory. When I download a file does it have to go into a certain file directory?

Dude, you need ringo pro as mentioned above. Has nothing til do with directory, your droid came pre loaded with the sounds they offer, full stop, period.
Get ringo and access all sounds.

"Rings Extended" takes care of those minor details for you. The app can be found in the Android Market.
