This is great opportunity for learn online education in Android dev. But If you already know Java, reading an Android-specific book (like the Wrox one whose name I cannot remember), studying the API, and doing all the tutorials should put one in a fairly good position to write a complex Android application.

If you don't know Java, read a book (I recommend Thinking In Java because it's free and well-written), do some basic Java tutorials, then move on to a relatively complex API such as Android's.

This is great...I've wondered how to better educate myself on the android platform, so could do some tweaking, etc...is that Java book a download?

    Application development books

First, upgrade your computer and make sure it fulfills the requirements for running android applications. Install SDK starter package to your computer. If you are to develop applications in Eclipse, install the ADT plug-in for eclipse as well. Besides, you should add Android platforms and other components to your SDK. After all this, you should sit back and explore the contents and then you will develop some basic understanding. Read some books about basic android development and familiarize yourself with java codes. For this, you may study android application development books published by O’Reilly. After knowing reasonably about it, you should study online certificates to know which android application development you are interested in.
