couple questions

okay so i'm new to the whole droid thing i've had a blackberry for the past 2 years. I'm going to try and root my phone, i've got 2.1 firmware which can be rooted right? Sorry for asking dumb questions just trying to learn and be a little more self sufficent. thanks in advance.

another question is i've seen some different stuff like GDE and stuff which one of those apps like that is best in your opinions. Or should i root the phone or do something different.
