anyone else have some advice?

I would just log into your VZW backup assistant account on your computer and export those contacts. Then log into the gmail website, click on contacts, then import the. CVS file.
Your contacts will always sync with your phone. ( as long as you have it set to in account options)

No need to wipe phone and switch back to stock.

Google contact sync is better than the Verizon backup IMO.
