No. No rooting necessary...you can use adb to push the file to /data/local without root access.

Also with the black screen issue...how are you zipping the folder? The first one I did, I had a folder called bootanimation that contained the desc.txt file and a folder called part0...I then zipped the bootanimation folder to make a bootanimation.zip...I got just a blck screen like you did...then I went into the bootanimation folder and just zipped the txt file and the part0 folder, and had the zip file called bootanimation.zip, and it worked fine. So make sure you are just zipping the desc.txt and the part0 folder (and part1 if you have it).

Also, don't forget to make sure you are using the "store" compression method for your zip.

Did you perhaps number the files starting with "1" instead of say "01" ? If you did I would expect it to cause issues because it would likely do 1, then 10 - 19, then 2 , then 20-29, get it?

My when my animation plays through the first time, it's really slow and choppy. Do guys know of anyway to fix this? Although I have a feeling it might just be because the zip is 20mb.

Dumb question, for these boot animations, do they need to match the same resolution as the Droid's screen to work effectively?

    Xbox,

The third number in the text file does work to control the speed for me. Have you tried increasing or decreasing this number?

Have you made sure the directory you're doing it in is not read-only by checking its properties in a file manager?

Are you doing this on your phone? You need to create your animations on your PC.
