So I have had my Droid rooted now for about 6 months now and I was just wondering if by going into Root Explorer and deleting things that I could possibly get a speed increase as well as just overall better performance and more memory by just deleting useless stuff. The real question is What stuff can I delete? What is on my phone that isn't doing anything and I can get rid of it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you know of any just flat out useless things on the phone that can be taken out and it actually helps let me know. Thanks for the help everybody.

    What I removed...

First, I created a folder on my SDCard. Instead of "deleting" the files, I moved them to the new folder on the SDCard. This allows for easy reinstall if I need to.

    com.amazon.mp3 -duh

CorpCal and Email - not used for GMail. Just for other accounts. Remove if you have never set up a corporate email account on your phone

GenieWidget - The new google News and Weather widget. I don't like it

Launcher2 - This is your home screen app. I removed it because I use launcherpro instead.

Mms - This is your default SMS messenger. I use Handcent instead. Update: I lost MMS capabilities, but not SMS. Reinstalled.

There are several others you can safely remove. I just haven't bothered. I will let you know if I remove more. Haven't had issues with these yet.

    I did as well lol

Barebones - CyanogenMod Wiki <-- is a rough guideline of what the apps do. Almost all can be deleted, but functionality will suffer because of your deletions obviously. Make a backup before you start deleting things.

I removed mms from my system/app folder and still have texting abilities with Handcent. I was worried about losing it also, Hence the backup on the SDCard. LOL

Give it a shot and see what happens. Just make sure you have an alternate sms app like Handcent to use...or you WILL lose you ability to text.

I just change the file extension on the apps I dont want with Root Explorer... that way if I need it again I can just rename it... but it keeps it from running and sucking resources.

    example:
    Browser.apk
    I change it to
    Browser.apk.bak

if I ever need it I just delete the .bak
    and voila... it reappears.

This was my understanding also, that Handcent works side by side with the Mms.apk
