What is the best way for a clean download of ICS?

I have heard many different and often conflicting way by Verizon reps. I am not nervous about doing a factory reset as I don't have many contacts or apps installed.

Short of a brand new phone an FDR is as clean as you can get. I did one and my download went off without a hitch.

I did not do an FDR before or after updating and it went as smooth as a hot knife through butter.

An FDR cannot hurt, and may help, but in my (sample size of one) experience, it may not be needed.

I had to do a factory reset because of an unrelated problem and then I did the update. I feel it was better that way as I have seen no issues so far, but again that is just my opinion and of course ymmv.

Actually I used MattLGroff's Utility v 1.71 to update to the official right as it started rolling out because I didn't want to wait for it to come to me.
