Charge text punctuation

I can't figure out how to set my keyboard to automatically correct 'im' to 'I'm' and other punctuation that requires commas and its driving me nuts! does anyone know how to fix it? I've gone through my settings a million times. also, anyone know the benefits of rooting my droid charge?

once you type the word it should show up above the keyboard. tap it and save it, though it should've worked like that out of the box.

i've saved all the words with punctuation but i still have to manually type it in correctly when i'm texting. it's driving me nuts! i didn't have this problem with my other droid.
