Can't Open Home Screen

Apologies in advance because I suspect this issue has been addressed before but I'm in a bit of a panic and such a smart phone novice that I'm not even sure what terms to search.

I've had my Droid for almost three months with no problems. I headed off on vacation today (thus the panic) and again was having no problems. An hour or so ago I tried to open it and am getting no response even though my notification light is blinking per usual. I've put it on the charger but still can not get it to open. Meanwhile I'm pretty much stuck in one place until I have a phone I can use. Any suggestions?
