can't make notifictions vibrate only when silent

So i just got my droid x and I've been messing with the sound settings. I want it so that if I turn my phone on silent it will vibrate, but when i turn my volume up it will make a sound (and not vibrate). as of now all I can get it to do is vibrate when on silent and vibrate+ringtone when not on silent. Is what want possible to achieve!?!?

Yes I believe all of this is possible. I know no matter if my volume is on high or vibrate either way I get zero sound from Gmail or text.....just open texting and hit menu hard key....then go to notification and turn ringtone to silent....check vibrate. You can do same thing in Gmail settings.

In menu, settings, and I think sound you can check vibrate on silent.
