Hey all, I'm running stock 2.2.2 on a Droid 1 with build number FRG83G. I've successfully rooted it the other day but looking through all of the tutorials for creating a Nandroid backup, everybody says you need "Droid root helper" which I cannot find in the Marketplace.

I ran a few custom roms last summer but was content with stock after that up until now. Are there updated tutorials or am I just missing something too simple?

    Thanks guys!!!

PS, my end goal is to install new roms, and I'm trying to bridge the gap between rooted and there.

How did you root? Do you have a custom recovery installed?

You don't need root helper. That's trying to get you to buy something.

You do need a custom recovery though.

You can flash with ROM Mangler or sbf one on.

There are tutorials for that. Easiest thing to do is flash with ROM Mangler and then apply the update.zip in link one in my signature, to remove FRS. Then you will have no issues rebooting into recovery.

That is the easiest and best way IMO.

Not familiar with that process. You need a custom recovery to make a backup. Since you say you have root access, go to the market and get Rom Manager. Its free. Launch the app and look for the ClockworkMod option. Select that and let it run. After your phone boots back up, turn it off, then hold the power + X buttons until you see ClockworkMod's recovery. Then use the volume rocker to change the options and the camera button to select. You can make a backup in rom manager, but I wouldnt. Making backups in recovery is more reliable.

Gosh, I can't believe I looked over the giant "Boot into Recovery" button on Rom Manager. I'm flashing to a new Rom now, thanks a lot to both of you for the advice!

Alright, having a slight issue. I got into recovery mode and chose install from SD card, I selected the rom I downloaded the other day and it looked like it installed fine. After I rebooted, it got stuck in a boot loop (the red eye and the word "droid"). I rebooted and recovered to where I was at but is there another step I'm missing?

Did you wipe before installing the rom? That can cause bootloops. I wipe everything and dont have problems.

Don't know what you are getting at here. Did you flash clockworkmod recovery and it won't let you boot into it? Or what?

Well basically I just have it rooted and I downloaded rom manager and a couple other apps but I tried to do the clockwork recovery in rom manager and it loads up in recovery but it doesn't have a back up like it was explaining earlier. I'm new to this so I'm a little slow. I really just wanna back it up and put a rom on it. I have a droid x and did it just fine I'm having a hard time with the d1 for some reason

When you get into ROM manager, the first selection should be flash clockworkmod recovery.

Do that, reboot to recovery and make a backup.

    That's not clockwork mod recovery.

That's why I tell everyone to root with link one in my signature.

Try flashing clockwork then go to the bottom of the menu and flash sprecovery and do that over like 3 times.

I would apply the update.zip file in the link in my signature so your custom recovery will stick on reboot.

Rom manager doesn't always work right...
First of all on Droid 1 the way to get to recovery other than rom manager is holding the power button and x on the keyboard...
(If you're sdcard is pretty full you may need to go to mounts try to mount sdcard, if it fails, wait till it turns off then use power button and volume up button to get to bootloader, then hold power button for a second to turn it off then hold power and x to go back into recovery and try to mount sdcard again)

Also try flashing the alternate recovery (sprecovery) then reflashing clockworkmod recovery and reboot to recovery
Also can try flashing a different version of clockwork...I use the 3. Something one and it actually works perfectly
