Can we hack brightness to go lower?

I admit: I'm a display hog. Whether I'm checking blogs or reading this forum, I run the display all the time. And it eats my battery.

The thing is, I keep my brightness at the lowest setting. But I could really go lower in most indoor situations and at night.

I know that the brightness can be forced lower still, as the dock has a "extra-low brightness" button. See it for yourself: get there from the clock, and then hit the sun button. The display goes really dim.

So how can I get the display to go lower in normal situations? Can we add an "extra-low brightness" setting to the power widget? Is there another widget that can do this for me? BB does a great job conserving battery when the phone isn't running, but I think this could help a lot when I'm running the display.

    Any thoughts?

I use an app called 'dimmer' to force the brightness even lower. When i toggle it from full brightness it says 'lowering from 255 to 10' and from min brightness it says 'lowering from 30 to 10'. I still think it could go lower when looking at my phone in a dark room, but until we have another option I use it every night.

    I'm gonna check out dimmer.

I know power manager (think that's what it's called) could do it I dimmed my screen down so much it looked off, totally black, I was freaking out, but I fixed it. But it's on a slider so you can set it to any # between 0-255.

I use Timeriffic it automatically adjusts your screen and your sound options, I use it to turn my phone on silent for when I'm asleep. There's also an option to dim the screen but I warn you, do NOT put it on 0, you will NOT be able to see anything :p

Check out Dimmer, what others have already suggested. Just use barcode scanner to scan this QR code. This is a first for me as far as upload a QR code, so I hope this works. :D

i know that awhile back Xeuodus (spelling?) released a lower brightness hack that allowed you to lower the brightness even more. i would suggest posting something in his section on the forums to see if he could whip something up for 2.2 :)

Dazzle will get the brightness down to 5% on the "Min" mode.

i think the lowest setting in roms should be lowered so we wouldnt need an extra app to do it and switching would be simple

In ROM Manager, JRummy has a minimum brightness hack to be downloaded. I think its part of The Shiz Customizer v.8
It works very well and allows you to retain the settings.

Lots of very helpful replies! Unfortunately, I don't have paid ROM Manager. Anyone have a download link to the brightness apk by droidmod or JRummy? And any reviews of either?

    Thanks all!

I tried both Dazzle and Dimmer on my phone but both apps lowered the brightness to the lowest setting the stock power widget can lower it to.

On Dazzle I tried the User Set setting, and even when I dropped it to 0 it still looked the same.
