There is WAAAAY too much out of date info out there and I have no idea of what is the easiest way to root this thing. It is Droid 1, android version 2.2.2, Build number FRG83G

Really, I have looked at about 1,000 different how-to-root threads and they are all old/wrong/jumbled.

    Anybody. Please?

Really, a 17 step process and about 30 paragraphs of instruction? I rooted my Droid 2 in about 5 minutes and expected the Droid 1 to be easier. I have now been reading about how to do this on Droid 1 for about 5 hours and am no closer to an answer. I must be missing something?

I have tried this entire process several times and everything seems to go according to plan until install/sdcard/update.zip portion and then it always goes to "installation aborted" It says, "no such file or directory" . I assume it has something to do with the re-naming of the file and leaving out the .zip portion of the name per instructions?

I can't believe this needs to be this complicated. Can anybody help me?

Check to make sure the file isn't named .zip.zip. its an easy mistake if ur on windows

And the file is on the ROOT of ur SD card right? In no other folders

I got it to work. Per directions based on what I saw on the laptop I named the file "update" I had to add .zip to the name to get it to work.

Now, on to flashing Cyanogenmod...Any suggestions?

It's been a while since I've used special recovery, if that's what you're using, but I believe you need to hit apply or allow update.zip first.
Also make sure you didn't put a space in the file name.

5 hrs. Don't feel bad, I spent half a day. Most of it was ironing out my mistakes.

Edit: looks like you got it. I type slow :)

Wipe everything and don't forget the Google Apps (gapps). Oh, and make a backup.
