My friend found a droid Eris that was beat up a bit and fixed it, and then gave it to me. Its now got the screen locked on it, and it says that I've attempted to unlock it too many times... Is there a way to use this phone or is it basically a paper weight? I don't care if it needs to start over from factory settings, cuz nothing on it is mine. Any help you could give would be great

:icon_ banana: <<<<<<< that would be me if I could use this phone :)

to do a master reset on the eris, with the power off:
Press the VOLUME DOWN and the SEND button
    Press the POWER button
Follow instructions to do the master reset.

This should take you out of the lock screen. I know this works with the Moto Droid. However, if you attemot to use the phone and the ESN(electronic Serial number) has been blacklisted then your SOL. There is a way around that too but I would get in trouble by typing it.

You could turn it in to see if it's been reported lost.

I would hope that would be what happened if it was mine that was lost.

There's got to be a way to see without actually turning it in first. ;)

yeah, the ESN has probably already been reported to Verizon (most anyone that reports their phone lost/stolen) so it would be mostly useless when unlocked. You may be able to play with ROMs on it but it wouldn't take/receive calls or do much of anything else.

You should turn it in to Verizon. They can give it back to its owner, and its going to be useless to you because it's blacklisted. What goes around comes around =)
