You can now run custom roms on your Pioneer Android Auto Head Unit! I figured this would come sooner or later, but didn't really think there would be enough interest in this for developers to really pursue it, but I guess I was wrong. The Android Auto system is open source, but is kind of closed off. Some developers have discovered a way to boot into a custom rom through the sdcard reader. The process is rather lengthy, but simple. Follow the 9 step process and you are gold. You should also be aware that if you attempt this and miss a step or do something wrong you can and will brick your device. Head to the link below for full directions.

I don't think Toyota will ever offer Android Auto or Car Play. They seem to insist on keeping their Entune suite.

I received an email today telling me that later this month they are replacing the Bing search feature in my car with one of their own.

I might have to get an aftermarket head unit eventually.
