Contacts are saved on your Google account (if you have Sync setup properly). You can also export them to the SD Card by navigating to the menu.

Apps can be saved to the SD Card with ASTRO, free.

SMS/MMS can be saved with Titanium Backup, free

Settings can be saved with MyBackupPro, $4 in the app store

I thought that titanium backup only backed up apps?

Last Sunday, I installed a 2.1 rom which required me to wipe date and cache. I used MyBackup for my apps and data. It worked fine.

Titanium backs up apps and data, although I don't remember if it did SMS/MMS.

When I try to run Titanium Backup, it says it could not acquire root privileges. What do I need to do?

Titanium is a life saver. I went ahead and donated so I don't know what's left out of the free version. I can wipe left and right switching ROMs and still have my data, apps, and importantly market links (something astro doesn't do). With astro, if you restore apps, your market will not know you have them.. so no way to remind you of updates until you load from market. Can't comment on mybackup, should also be good.

You can also backup everything to the Google cloud if you enable the backup option under "Privacy" in Android's settings.
