Best texting app for an avid college student texter? :D

I text. a lot. Try up to 4,000 messages at least a month, and more once I go back to school (thank god for unlimited messaging!). I've noticed some problem with the normal messaging app that bother me, such as it's now clicking on the wrong name.... that's caused some very awkward moments, haha.

I'm looking for a Messaging app that is/can:

1. very streamlined
2. FAST
3. easy to use (I like fiddling with things however!)
4. Customizable LED light color (if possible, this would be awesome!)
5. If at all possible, somewhat similar to the normal Messaging app?

I run on a Motorola Droid 1 with Froyo (from OTA) update.

Is Handcent really that nice? I've been looking into it, I'm just very wary of switching... and for some reason, I'm going to miss that message bubble smile popping up when i get a message, lol

I recently purchased the Droid X....loving the phone!! Is there any way to keep the screen lit while using Pandora or the Navigation or anything else that I would like to keep the screen lit instead of it going black???

Since it seems that Handcent is the clear favorite, I downloaded it, and I'm enjoying it so far

also, get swype. My friend thought he was quick on the stock touchscreen keyboard in landscape mode, thought he could out type me. He didn't know I was using swype. We where both typing out an article in magazine that was ~80 words. I was done in no time, he was still tapping.

...okay, Handcent is the clear winner, no question. I've never been able to customize so much, its amazing! Now, I wish I could change the color of the LED light for Facebook... lol

And I may get swype... I text mainly with the keyboard, I only use the screen when i need to send a very quick text. Most of the time, the screen can't keep up with me, lol.

Screw swype. Give SwifyKey Beta (keyboard) a try. It picks up on your typing tendencies and usually can predict what you are typing.
