So, which do you guys think is better and why?

If you don't know what Barnacle is, search "Barnacle" in the market.

I'm kind of starting to like Barnacle more and more. ;D

I'm debating getting Barnacle tethering just because I've had a lot of bad luck with Wireless Tether for Root Users. Was hoping you'd be able to give your review of both like the above poster :p

Well I have actually had issues with both of them. Sometimes barnacle doesn't stop correctly when you are finished tethering and it cooks your battery, and sometimes wifi tether for root users doesn't start correctly, so you can't tether in the first place. I hope Froyo comes soon, and I hope VZW doesn't block the tethering portions of it.

I just installed Barnacle this afternoon and have only played with it for about 15min or so. Unfortunately, the WEP key portion is bunked at the moment. Also, I can't get the dang thing to let my laptop connect with the MAC address entered into the app. Oh well... Either way, it has a lot of potential from my limited use - and I need to deal with that netfilter stuff.

Wifi Tether is free and works great for me, so there's no reason to look into alternatives, especially ones that cost $10....

    Good luck.

Yep, you're right. I had a Market-based reading failure. Wifi Tether works so well for me, that I've never bothered to look up alternatives until this thread, and I cant even seem to do that right...

    My bad.

I just don't get how anyone can have a problem with wifi tether, it's idiot-proof.

Is there a way to install it without using a modded rom? (other than one that is rooted that is)

If you are only interested in using it for your own computer....
I liked PdaNet. It is a nice WiFi tether app. It does require installing interface software on your pc also. It is also free and the USB connection charges your phone while you are connected. Support is good also.

It is idiot-proof. When it works. My problem with it was that I would click to start tethering, then it would pop up a message saying error: tethering not started, and then it would do nothing. I immediately went to the market and installed barnacle and it worked perfectly, so I don't know what its problem was.

pdaNet is not wifi thether.. otherwise you wouldn't need the USB cable.

It's not about the Rom, you have to use a kernel that is compatible with wifi tethering, which is pretty much all of them. You can get it in the market.

PdaNet *can* "Wifi" tether over a bluetooth connection.

Wifi is Wifi, meaning wireless NIC. BT is BT. There is no such thing as Wifi over BT.

I use Barnacle Tether, its very easy to use, I've impressed friends by connecting to their iPhones when they have no service at all. I tried WiFi Tether and just couldn't figure it out. Just wouldnt work right for me.

I've got Wifi Tether and Barnacle Tether and I can't get either of them to work. My computer finds them and it says it's connected but that there is no internet connection... Can anyone help me and tell me why it won't work?

That happened to me at first with Barnacle. I can't recall exactly what I did, but I think i hit the "Associate" button on Barnacle, and maybe that did the trick. Or i simply disconnected from it on my computer, hit associate, brought the wireless list back up, doube clicked it and it worked. It was a bunch of back-n-forth (now and then). But once I got it connected, it was connected. My description sounds worse than it was (FYI).
