You should be able to make a backup from the recovery. There is also Titanium Backup. That mostly backs up your apps and data. The recovery backs up the whole phone. Always make a backup before making changes. Hope this helps.

Yeah, so as soon as you have the recovery installed go to backup/restore in recovery and create a backup. Once you are rooted I recommend rom manager because when you choose the backup option you can NAME the backup which is super useful so you can keep organized :p

At risk of sounding like an idiot is the recovery a different app or a native program in the droid x? Past posts were a big help

Its something you flash to your phone to be able to install custom roms, installing is usually done through your computer, but some phones its not needed, not sure about the droid x (I don't have one and haven't rooted for anyone) but it should be in any rooting walk-through :)

Its not an app. It becomes "native" once flashed.

So what do I use to make a recovery? Maybe I don't get it but bootstrapper etc all say I have to have an already rooted phone before I can make a recovery? And I'm trying to backup my phone before I root. Sucks being a newbie

I rooted, then made a back up. Your apps are linked to your google account. All you should loose are texts and call logs.

Wow, nobody here caught this??? I mean, the title of this thread is "Backup before root?" Sure _maybe_ Titanium _might_ backup some things without the phone being rooted first, but those of you talking about backing up through recovery? The stock android recovery does NOT include the ability to do any backups.

The only way you can make a complete backup of your phone is AFTER you root AND install a custom recovery, all of which include nandroid. Nandroid is what actually does the backup/restore.
