most of the boot.img's out there now have manual brightness working without auto brightness, some of the older boot.imgs have only auto brightness and no manual, so you might be able to find one that works for you

I have the same issue - really liking 8.3 bugless rom w/Tas 900mhz overclock, but off and on the brightness jumps to full laser and requires a reboot to fix!

OK here is kinda a fix worked for me anyway
Slide KB open hit light toggle on power bar
Till it goes back to auto setting close KB hit
power button to put in sleep mode then unlock it
go to to settings light and display then brightness
    and check auto brightness.

Done that few times after some reboots but last reboot
auto brightness was just working. :)

To all of you having problems with Brightness and Overclock o would suggest using ChevyNo1's patcher http://www.droidforums.net/forum/dr...ss-tether-patcher-one-click-solution-2-x.html. It is super easy and it will give you brightness, wifi tether, overclocking to 800 900 1000 MHz.
And thanks again to ChevyNo1 for his excellent work we should all support him.

Some are saying that the overclock boot images are based off of 2.0. Some of the bugs that were in 2.0 have shown back up. Hopefully he will release an updated version that fixes all of that.

Im using the Beautiful Beast which is OC'd to 800 and wifi tether. My brightness at first wasnt working after installing the wifi. I set my brightness to auto then rebooted. Unchecked auto and its worked fine ever since.
