isn't it illegal to refuse cash?

Not large bills, at least.

Any backing on that?

Never mind...Got it

U.S. Treasury - FAQs: Legal Tender Status of currency

I thought that United States currency was legal tender for all debts. Some businesses or governmental agencies say that they will only accept checks, money orders or credit cards as payment, and others will only accept currency notes in denominations of $20 or smaller. Isn't this illegal?

The pertinent portion of law that applies to your question is the Coinage Act of 1965, specifically Section 31 U.S.C. 5103, entitled "Legal tender," which states: "United States coins and currency (including Federal reserve notes and circulating notes of Federal reserve banks and national banks) are legal tender for all debts, public charges, taxes, and dues."

This statute means that all United States money as identified above are a valid and legal offer of payment for debts when tendered to a creditor. There is, however, no Federal statute mandating that a private business, a person or an organization must accept currency or coins as for payment for goods and/or services. Private businesses are free to develop their own policies on whether or not to accept cash unless there is a State law which says otherwise. For example, a bus line may prohibit payment of fares in pennies or dollar bills. In addition, movie theaters, convenience stores and gas stations may refuse to accept large denomination currency (usually notes above $20) as a matter of policy.

Not illegal but they are in violation of their agreement with the CC Company.

MEGA UPDATE: Requiring Minimum Credit Card Purchases is a Violation - The Consumerist

Yea I know but was easier to type illegal then type out against the CC agreement ..lol but doesnt matter now cause I had to type more to explain anyways :D

It somehow fits with Steve Jobs idea about porn. After all, cash is what you give a lap dancer (so I'm told) and Apple wants no part of that.

Now that I think about it, most apt buildings dont take cash either. The rental office will take check or money order.

But this is the first time I ever heard of a retail store not taking cash....if he trying to set a standard, it wont work.

I bought an ipad for the wife a couple weeks ago. I went with cash and was refused the sale. I guess they did me a favor, though. I put it on my amex and got points for the purchase.

i was at the apple store last week and the REAL point to no cash for the ipad is because that it is not yet out in other countries so they are using the credit cards to make sure that it is going to an american address. so people arent taking it home with them.

You would have been better off walking out of the store and refusing purchase. Consumers, hell.. People in general have to take a stand for what is right and not cave in. The woman in the news story finally did get her iPad, for free no less, from Apple. Apple has also changed their purchasing policy since the story broke and now allows cash purchases with the caveat that the buyer create an iTunes account at the time of purchase.

This is what happens when people speak out. Wrongs get righted. Every individual has the ability to effect change. By not exercising that ability and accepting everything at face value is a loss for everyone.
