Last week California Judge Lucy Koh told Samsung and Apple that they would have to drop some of their patent claims in order to keep their proposed July 30th trial date. It seems that both companies listened and have filed motions to do just that. Late Monday night Apple made a filing in its California litigation that reduced their claims by roughly half and Samsung soon followed offering to drop five of their twelve claims. It is worth noting that both Apple and Samsung are free to bring up the dropped disputes in later trials.

Despite the reduced claims both companies are still very much at odds, with Apple claiming that Samsung is a "copycat" and stating that "we just want people to invent their own stuff" while Samsung maintains that Apple is simply "trying to compete through litigation". What do you think? Let us know in the forums.

I'm going to go with the latter. Clearly Apple is trying to compete through litigation. Basic phone shape and functionality should not be available for patent. Imagine the hoops companies would have to jump through if one company were able to patent the basic design of flat panel televisions. These lawsuits are garbage and need to be tossed out wholesale.

Apple is going to fall further and further behind if they don't start focusing on innovation and drop this idiocy. The iPhone 4S should have been 4G capable, so as it stands their hardware is for all intents and purposes two years behind and iOS 5 is nothing but blantant theft of Android and Windows Phone functionality. Something is wrong when the company who made many feel like smart phones were a necessity is constantly playing catch up and focusing on nonsense litigation. Even Apple fans have told them to give up the lawsuits.

I agree, it should be about Innovation and the Competition and not the Style/Shape of the products. I mean Hell most Cars, TV's, and Computers have the same software and/or style. Apple is just p!ssed because they know they don't offer the best products, they just offer a Status Symbol. For Apple its never been about Innovation and the Competition, its been about taking others ideas and making it Look better for a greater price to use as a Status Symbol example the Ipod and their Computers.
