App to Monitor Background Data?

Hi All,

I'm a bit of a newbie, so please excuse me if it's a dumb question, but I can't seem to find an answer from extensive searching.

So we all know that turning off background data is a massive battery saver. What I want to know is WHY? As in, what apps are doing what and when to use so much data. What app can I use to log this kind of data usage?

Anything that autoupdates (email, twitter, Facebook, any widget you have, etc) will use background data. I think turning off background data makes smart phones a regular phone. The battery savings isn't enough for me to turn off background data. Not worth it IMO.
