Anyway to lock the screen without it going dark?

I would like to lock my screen but be able to see what is on the screen and have it not go dark. Is this possible?

Once in a while, my phone will not go dark after I lock the phone. Then I press the lock button again to make it go dark. Except, I'm not sure how or why that only happens sometimes.
