Not to the default dimmest setting but something that really REALLY dims the screen that would make it perfect for viewing your phone in a movie or somewhere dark?

this looks promising, but when I leave the app, it returns to the phones defaults low setting instead of being extremely dark

Works well on my D1. I just put the icon on one of my home screens and tap it to enable.

On Widget Locker it has a slider to dim the screen to 3 levels. I like this alot because you can dim right from your lock screen

If you're rooted, AdjBrightness does what you're looking for. The UI could be better, but it gets the job done.
