Charlene Munilall, general manager for Huawei’s Consumer Business Group in South Africa, recently made some intriguing comments regarding Huawei's smartphone plans this year. The part that stands out the most is basically a confirmation that Huawei will be making another Nexus device this year. If you read between the lines of her statement, it seems likely that Huawei will be the exclusive Nexus OEM for 2016.
Here's what Munilall had to say in reference to questions as to why the Nexus 6P didn't come officially to South Africa,
“The Nexus product is a very niche product… the techies love it but there’s a very small number of people that buy it. Hence Cellucity only brought 300… into the country,” she explained.
“…The operators generally don’t take up the Nexus device,” Munilall added.
“That said, the distributors, our open market, do bring in the device, that’s how Cellucity got it… and that will still be the same this year. We’re doing the Nexus again this year, by the way,” she explained. ~ GearBurn
As you can see from her statement, she also confirms what Android fans have long suspected... that the Nexus devices only form a tiny part of a much larger Android ecosystem. While the Nexus device is a niche product, it also serves as an excellent example of what Android is capable of when OEMs keep the OS as pure as possible.
Considering how well received the Nexus 6P was last year, it's exciting to see that Huawei will be covering the Nexus line again this year.
