So I was just curious if anyone thought that an android headunit would be a good idea. The main thing I liked about my Ipod is that I could hook it up straight to my headunit. However, with Android being so flexible you would think they'd be able to make a headunit with the OS on it. You'd be able to tether it to your phone and use Google maps for navigation. You'd be able to access all your music an play it on the go and still be able to control it from the headunit. You'd be able to see your album art and everything. It seems like something that should have already been done. I know you can hook your phone up by bluetooth or usb, but it's kind of a mess using usb and when you use bluetooth you still have to control it from your phone. I was just wondering if any of you guys had any thoughts on this.

The head unit itself could run Android but that's not a necessity to interface with Android. Head units that interface with iOS devices don't run iOS, for example.

Yeah but in order to utilize the market and google maps and all that Android would probably be best. Autolinq seems to be working on one but they said they were coming out with an sdk in Jan and it's still no where to be seen.

here is a thought and what i am hoping to do after i get my Archos tablet for christmas (hint hint wifey....). i already have a decent headunit that supports bluetooth. Currently i tether my OG Droid to it via BT and use mixzing on my droid or Pandora. once I get my tablet Im going to move my current headunit probably under my passenger front seat or into my glove box... then mount the tablet in my dash and either use an audio cable to connect or if BT is supported from the tablet I will link that way,. then i can use the tablet for the audio like I currently do from my droid. as for Market and what not, I have a five spot that I carry with me to work and what not, so it would be a simple thing to connect to that as well for market and internet duties. as far as NAV, i know there are a few programs out there that you can download from the market that do not need a data connection, just GPS, and yup, I still have my old BT GPS puck....

not the ideal solution for someone who is nnot a geek, but it kinda is what you are talking about. kinda.

    ok, not really.

    My bad. :)

Actually, that's a really good idea. I might have to try it. It would be a nice little project for me.
