Since 2.3 is now coming out on the galaxy s, should we be expecting it shortly for our Motorola Droids or are we not going to be able to get it?

Will the droid get an official update? Doubt it.

Will the community keep a device alive because it can still run with the best of them? Of course.

I easily expect us to get gb unofficially.

If you root your phone then you will have to wait for a custom ROM.

The sdk is out... I'm sure devs somewhere are trying to get it working. Cooking up a working rom is going to be difficult though. I would assume that getting a kernel to work is going to be particularly chalanging

You can't make a ROM with the SDK - you need Source Codes - it's going to be awhile still

Nah, it's right around the corner...punk.kaos already has it booted on the Eris. Of course it is rough...just got released today. But, if he can get it booted on it, then how far away will a version for the D1 be?

    The Gingerthread - xda-developers

Maybe I should be more clear about what this is though, so to not confuse some. This is 2.3, using pre-compiled code from the SDK Emulator, along with another kernel, some magic, and a modified boot.img from another rom build. So, not official source code, but it is what it is...Gingerbread.

We had similar "hacked together" roms for the Droid for OS 2.1 (when we were at 2.0.1).
They pretty much were all buggy, some less than others.

I think most people would be smart enough to wait for the actual source to be released and build from that.

There will be ROMs built with as much Gingerbread as Andy can eat without puking. Nuff said.

I think the point kind of missed you. Of course it's gonna be buggy, but it depressing that you think it would be a waste of time to play around with it. It's an experiment. You can learn alot, and at the same time, be ahead of the game when the actual source drops or at least a port from another device is available.

The D1 does meet the minimum hardware requirements from what I've heard.

It's an old rumor from back in the summer that Gingerbread would require a 1 gig processor or higher, was never confirmed.

May be maybe not? If we're not getting the update it may give some support to it? I for one would like to get it, it's shame that I might have to root my phone to get it.

Google denied it, the guy who started it said it was only a suggestion. What more confirmation do you need? :)

This came from my brain by way of my finger and my phone. Don't ask where any of them have been. Especially the brain.

Google only ever responded once via twitter with comments like this:

I love it when people make stuff up.

Rumor is not an official statement.

Officially of course, this neither confirms or denies the rumor, so it's anyone's guess.

Either way if the N1 gets Gingerbread, then the droid1 will at least get that version ported over.Since they are both vanilla android, just different hardware, the port isn't that hard to pull off.

All I know is if its the "fastest one yet" that I need it. Mines running pretty smooth right now tho with SS4.9 and Chevy's 1.2ghz ulv kernel.
