Also new to Droid

I am new to Droid and despite finding excellent threads on "how to's" I can't seem to find a basic explanation of what/why rooting is and changing ROM's, etc. I'm probably not searching correctly as I keep getting "zero" when I try to search for these things. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Thanks for the links. I just read a post where someone said he was having DOS flashbacks...ME TOO! This Linux language is baffling! But, I will keep trying and appreciate the welcome!
