How do I activate adb shell from the sdk so I can install the wireless tethering kernal?

I run the execute in cmd and it gives me a bunch of commands including the one to launch the adb shell and I've tried everything I can think of to "attach" the commands to the execute adb.exe command and I can't seem to do it... apparently all my command prompt knowledge from the dos days has left me.

Edit: Found syntax in SDK manual but it still doesn't seem to be working.

    I type

    adb [-d] <adb shell>

    and get
error syntax of the command is incorrect

Nevermind, figured it out.... yeah command prompt syntax format had totally left me
