I've been trying to grasp the concept of rooting so i can be able to do all these cool things im hearing about such as custom boot animations and 2.1 . However everytime i try to root i get

E:failed to open /sdcard/update.zip (no such file or directory)
E: Signature verification failed Installation aborted

and it clearly is there. I beleive i was able to go through the installation well once, but never got the "Superuser Permission" app

anyone help me out? please i'm extreely new to the android community. don't even know what cynaogen?? is..

I'm not really sure about your issues with rooting, but lucky for you you can get custom boot animations and some great apps from 2.1 without root privilieges!

Cyanogen doesn't have a Droid release, so you don't need to worry about knowing anything about it! For custom boot animations just follow the post to setup adb here:
    http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-hacks/10924-how-adb-windows-made-easy.html?highlight=windows
and then follow the instructions for pushing a bootanimation here:
    http://www.droidforums.net/forum/dr...covery-framework-res-apk-custom-boot-ani.html

I bet you need to rename the file just "update" you prbably unkowingly have it named update.zip.zip

Also, you don't need root access to change boot animation FYI

Do i really not need to root to change bootanimation???

i'm running 2.0.1.... i kind of am dying for 2.1.. but i think i want to wait for the offiicial release, so that all the bugs are worked out..

Custom Boot Animation ROOT IS NOT REQUIRED!!!
Download desired bootanimation.zip to your adb tools directory.
    Code:
    adb push bootanimation.zip /data/local

    kind of confused....

    =/

Yeah I was thinkin about switching to the 2.1 now but I bricked my phone last night so I'm laying off the modding for a while haha........I was changing around the framework and that's what did it so be careful with that if you decide to change it up

What are you confused about? Do you already have a desired custom bootanimation.zip file?

My phone was rooted when I did this:

    su

    mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system

    dd if=/sdcard/bootanimation.zip of=/system/media/bootanimation.zip

    Reboot

You just gotta get the bootanimation.zip or whatever you called it on your SD card then do those steps.....I rooted mine so I'm not sure how to do it if it's not rooted but if you look around and search google or something you can easily find directions

you need the android sdk for it, the adb is in the tools folder

once you have the android sdk installed place the bootanimation.zip within the android-sdk-windows/tools folder.

then run a command prompt and do this:

    cd /Users/yourusername/path/to/android-sdk-windows/tools

    eg: /Users/user/Desktop/android-sdk-windows/tools <--where i have mine installed.

then, once you are in that folder, plug your phone into your pc with debugging mode on (make sure you have drivers installed, if not, go download them from motorolas website)

once you're all jacked in, in the cmd prompt type in:

    adb push bootanimation.zip /data/local

it will push your new boot animation to the /data/local portion of the phone. unplug your phone and reboot. if all goes well you'll be staring at your new boot animation.

@swickdick - I know you are trying to be helpful, butbobmundo is not rooted and probably won't be any time soon. Talking about how you put on a custom animation with root DOES NOT HELP. All you are going to do is add to the confusion.

@Signum - Why do you have android-sdk-windows but you are using unix style file paths in your instructions?

@bob - In my post the first link I gave was to instructions for getting adb. Did you follow that link and get adb installed? If not go back and do that first. If you are on Mac or linux instead of Windows please let us know.

The following instructions are for windows. If you have adb all ready to go in c:\android\tools then put your new bootanimation.zip file there.
Now click run(or press windows_key + R) and type "cmd" and press enter to bring up the command prompt.
Next type "c:" and press enter to get to your C drive.
Then type "cd c:\android\tools" and press enter to get into the android tools directory.
Finally Type "adb push yourbootanimationfile.zip /data/local/bootanimation.zip" and press enter to get the bootanimation onto your Droid.

b/c my sdk folder is on my desktop not my C:, as such i have to nav to the desktop in order to open it. its a little bit (well a lot) of typing but it works for me no problems.

What I mean is that most windows users don't use forward slashes for navigating directories. ;) LoL
