    Here is my situation:

I had an unrooted froyo 2.2 phone. I installed sprecovery ese81 and it messed up the phone because i had the 2.1 kernel installed on 2.2. so then i reverted back to 2.0.1, installed motocache's sprecovery w/o kernel and also rooted.

the problem is, im trying to load a custom rom and when i try to do it it gives me E:can't open/sdcard/update.zip (bad) and then installation aborted.

the way i tried to install the rom was, i downloaded the rom (cm 2 rc3) and extracted the file. I then transferred the whole file onto the root of my sd card. I tried renaming it in the sd card either update.zip and update and neither worked.

looked for some help as to what the problem could be.

Don't extract the file. Just rename it update.zip and watch that windows doesn't name it update.zip.zip.

Yes. But you will have to rename the update.zip file already on your sd card then name the kernel to update.zip, and load it as you did the rom.
