This is a really cool video to watch now, especially considering this product was introduced exactly 5 years ago yesterday. Imagine that nearly everyone in that audience had never seen some of the innovations introduced to them until that very moment, yet we all are now very familiar with them and consider them as standard issue features.

The one thing I like about the iPhone...it's hype!

It's sexy...and it's fun to hold....but Apple really hyped the crap outta it to get the app devs to devote time on the side from their full time jobs to start tinkering and making "apps"...and eventually making it their full time job

Or kids to crack open programming books and learn how to make a silly thing for 99 cents (the magical 99 cent price figure....)

Or those commercials. Always joyous or informative doing things that look so simple (though many phones already did 'em....)

Best yet....making people feel as if THEY were mac users on the sly. Ask a typical iPhone user...what OS are they running?

"That mac one. I'll admit...it's nice....different from what they had in school!"

Like android phones, w/out the apps....an iPhone is bare and boring. That's where I respect 'em. That...and how they prostituted themselves to allow anyone to make any type of accessory for the phone!!! I went to wal mart for a nexus case....couldn't find one. But literally, over 40 iphone cases!!!!

People can hate and be in denial all they want, but this day changed smartphones forever. Whether you want to believe that or not is completely irrelevant. You don't have to like Apple but to be in complete denial of what this phone did for the industry is just ignorance. Obviously Android has now come along and stepped the game up but at the time there was nothing even remotely like the iPhone.

Right, if there's one thing I get frustrated about it's the lack of accessories for the various Android phones and the virtual plethora of cool accessories for the iPhone and adapters to interface with other equipment. One of the keys to that is the custom 30 pin connector that has remained the same across the iPod and iPhone and in the same position at the bottom for a good number of years. If Google had made a similar standard we'd have seen far more support with accessories over the years.

It is funny though that at the time the 3.5 inch screen was considered "big" and now when I hold an iPhone after having my Galaxy Nexus the thing is just tiny. I wish Apple would do more of this type of stuff now instead of fighting in the courts! It would push everyone to be better.

The Iphone is OK (if you are desperate) But the droid cannot be beat. Tough OS.:icon_ lala: The Iphone probably does what you want it to do. But there is not a lot of room for self personalization as with the droid. Even when I jail-broke it there just was no excitement to the phone. But we each have our own opinion.

He stated they were 5 years ahead of anything else, now five years later and apple acknowledges that Android is ahead in many ways... need some time estimate calibrations.

I just got the iphone4s and it is anything but boring and yes, I was desparate. Desparate to get something that was reliable. I come from the original droid, rooted and customized it to death. The fact is, I'd rather have a smartphone that doesn't foreclose, randomly reboot, ask which app I'd like to perform the function with, has a camera that actually works and takes awesome pics/vids, and is a pleasure to use as a telephone. I'm still with Verizon, but my call quality is 10X better. Not to mention, it syncs with everything gmail, calendars, outlook, etc. I have a ford with Sync. It detects my phone and I listen to all my music, pandora, etc. and I have to do nothing at all. Just sit my a$$ down and it's all synced up ready to go. I understand the droid rebels, but if you want a reliable piece of hardware running an excellent operating system, get yourself one. You will be amazed and the fact that I can't change the battery icon or it's color doesn't really mean anything anymore.

Thank you for the post. I actually thought it was fun to watch. I can only imagine what the audience was thinking during this. You could almost hear them salivating LOL. I personally think for them to really move forward they are going to have to go with a bigger screen. But I'm no Steve Jobs which is why I'm typing this at midnight at work :).

Yeah, I'm hoping that manufacturers will cut down to 3 or so max devices on the market at any one time. If they'd focus on only a few it would save them tons in development and in support. They'd also have a lot more customer loyalty because buyers would know that the company is going to be there with them for the long haul.

Word. The Galaxy Nexus launch didn't have quite the same energy as the original iPhone release, but it was fun as heck to watch it over a live stream and see what was coming with the Nexus and ICS. The only Apple experience now seems to be waiting in line for the newest product, which the company I feel is taking for a given. They've lost that lovin' feeling.

    I feel you, man. When I'm 90 I won't care about customization either =p

I remember a couple of ads run when the first iPhone came out. Obviously set up in a mall, there was a mic and a blank screen. The idea was for an iPhone owner, when asked "Why did you get an iPhone?", to stand in front of the mic and justify the purchase.

The first was a guy saying that he used to carry a phone for calls, a phone for texting and a digital camera. Now he just carried an iPhone. I want to comment on why the text phone couldn't make calls and the original iPhone had a 2 megapixel camera when 5 megapixels was pretty common on separate digital cameras.

The second was of an airlines co-pilot who said that they were on the runway and the tower announced a delay due to weather. The co-pilot looked at the weather on his iPhone, saw there was a break in the weather, and called the tower telling them of that fact. The tower, awed by the co-pilot's knowledge of the weather, let them take off.

Now, my phone at the time was the Moto e815. It could text, it could take pictures (only 1 megapixel) and could even access the weather.

I'll be honest, if Verizon had the iPhone when I was buying the LG Voyager, I might have gotten the iPhone.

And I've wondered if this will always be a "darn it!" moment for Apple. The "woulda, coulda, shouldas" of going with ATT over Verizon (or multiple carriers) right out of the gate. If Verizon had the iPh initially, the Droid movement would have been completely changed. And at this point, it's too late. Exclusivity isn't always a good thing.

I did enjoy the video, although I skipped through some of it, it was neat to see. Five years was NOT that long ago, but it's obvious that in the tech world, it's a lifetime. I'm thankful for the iPh development because without it, who knows what Android would be?

When he introduced it with the name "iPhone", I kind of heard a chuckle go thru the audience. It sounded like they thought the name was a joke. Oh just wait guys, the "iPad" is coming... :p

Im not sure I understand. My DROID X does all those things including Ford SYNC on my F-150.

I'll give you the camera though. IPhone has a nice camera.

As cool as the first iPhone was I think people are forgetting that the iPhone didn't multitask until the iPhone 4. It couldn't send mms which is quite pathetic. It didn't have flash on the camera so night shots were completely pointless. I never considered it a true smart phone until it began to multi task. How can a smart phone be considered smart and not be able to run two things at once?

And even though android back at that time was not exactly a well known platform it did all of those things.

Android has changed very little, functionally at least. Apple, which people seem to love because they've always remained the same has changed more than any other manufacturer. The only thing they haven't changed is their look.
