I believe Huskur is right on this one because it will probably be broadcasted on a different band width or require a different antenna. I got my D2 about 6 months ago and will have to upgrade to a 4G LTE device if I ever want to upgrade to 4G. Sorry its probabaly not capable tho. Maybe VZW will push out early upgrades or a discount for switching to 4G LTE.

Had a feeling that would be the case. Maybe they will offer the upgrade discounts, I will be all over that!

Definitly not capable -- Keep in mind that unless you live in an urban/launch area, it will take 18+ months for 4G LTE to become prevalent. At which point, there will be many more 4G phone options, and you'll be that much closer to an upgrade.
