Is this update big enough to require a hard reset before?

If you are stock (not unlocked boot loader) then OTA update should be fine with no reset needed for you..

Clear Cache?

Sometimes big updates like this require clearing cache per app, or for the phone overall (dalvik cache), and/or rebooting an extra time or 2.

My thoughts too, I've never resented a full reset but what a hassle!

I think you answered your own question, I don't think you can update while rooted.
