I have a buddy who just purchased his droid. He has 2.1 stock as of right now. He would like to root.. Can you root a 2.1 stock phone? I wasn't able to find anything after searching the magical googles.

    Try harder? :p

There are about a billion threads on here answering that. The summary version is:

you can't directly root a phone running 2.1, you need to use a windows utility to flash the phone back to stock 2.0.1, then root it, then manually update it to 2.1 again with an update image that doesn't remove root.

Do custom ROMS have 2.1 features such as pinch to zoom?

install rom manager and flash the sprecovery then go ahead and install a custom rom... its that simple. Rom manager is free in the market and there is nothing else you need to do. No flashing back to 2.0.1 anymore.

Yup... you don't have to downgrade anymore or even use a custom ROM. Check out this post here, which has all the instructions and links you need in one place:

Most custom ROMS *are* 2.1, so they have all the same features.

i just rooted mine for the first time and it had the 2.1 update... i used the videos from hacking help to guide me as well as reading many posts with tips... if he follows closely he'll be fine.... it took me quite a while being a first but its worth it
