According to another thread, even if this setting is off, checking then unchecking it may fix your problem, if you haven't already tried that.
There's a setting in Settings->Accessibility called "Flash notification" that sounds like it might do what you're describing, make sure it's not on.

Try "iSyncr for Mac" in the Google Play store, the PC version seems to work pretty well for me.

Settings->Bluetooth, press the 'gear' icon next to the device you want to rename, then click "Rename".
FoxFi, doesn't require root and works great on my S3. It's free for (time) limited use, then you just have to restart it.
