Even after you re-boot (power off then back on)?
After I reboot, the gray bar disappears. It is just that the space that remains is empty.
Is there a way to regain back the home screen space, that Google Search used to be using?

I use an USB connection to my PC mostly for ADB. I don't need the phone memory mapped to drives on...
At least for me, you have to go into Calendar, Menu, Calendars, and make sure that "Contact's Birthdays and events" is set to visible.
