If you're able to transfer files to your Droid's SD card either via usb or wifi then you can root. To root 2.0.1 you just put on your SD card and then boot into recovery mode which can be done by holding down "x" while turning the phone on. Here's more info: Obtaining Root | Root Your Droid

I have rooted 2.1 but that's just because I'm running a ROM. There are rooted 2.1 files but I'm not sure exactly where. When your Droid is rooted you can't update via OTA, even if the update gets pushed to your phone it will fail to install. Rooting uses an exploit in the Android OS but with each update they fix the previous exploit thus it has to be re-rooted.
